For two weeks I used Bangkok, Thailand as a jumping off point to visiting both Cambodia and the Thai countryside in July 2023. There is a huge contrast between the varied and bucolic terrain of Thailand and the massive sprawling urban area of Bangkok.
Thailand is one of the ‘Asian Tiger‘ economies and the evidence of rapid growth is everywhere. Thailand has a mountainous deep interior, vast tracts of flat arable in the centre of the country and a low-lying southern coastal peninsula. It takes 2 days and nights to cross by train from Chaing-Mai in the north to the Malaysian border in the south, a voyage I highly recommend.
Thai’s are warm and generous people who live in the moment. Thai food is arguably some of the best in the world, particularly if you like things spicy. The street food is also amazing, if you know what you’re doing.
